Zodiac rentals or rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) have consolidated as the perfect entry point into the nautical world and the favorite option of thousands of users to enjoy the sea as dynamically as possible. Although "Zodiac" is originally a trademark, the term has been popularized to define all rigid inflatable boats (known internationally as RIBs). These vessels, which combine a solid central hull with perimeter pneumatic tubes, are true aquatic all-terrain vehicles.
For the vast majority of our users on VivaBoat, the ideal format to enjoy these speedboats is the one-day getaway or day charter. In a few hours, a RIB allows you to explore an astonishing amount of coastline, discover secret spots, and anchor in crystal-clear waters with amazing ease. Below, we detail in depth why an inflatable boat can be your best ally for your next voyage and how to manage your booking flawlessly.
The unstoppable success of inflatables in the recreational boat rental sector is no coincidence. Their hybrid design gives them technical features that radically differentiate them from boats made entirely of fiberglass or wood.
By incorporating large air-filled tubes (usually made of PVC or high-resistance materials like Hypalon-Neoprene), the total weight of the boat is drastically reduced. This extreme lightness allows the boat to quickly reach planing speed (when the hull rises and barely touches the water's surface), even with moderate power outboard engines. This translates into very fast trips between different coves, maximizing enjoyment and swimming time during your one-day rental.
The perimeter tubes not only act as a giant bumper that greatly facilitates docking maneuvers in the port, but they also divide the air into multiple independent chambers. This configuration makes zodiacs extraordinarily safe vessels with a very high buoyancy reserve. Even in choppy seas, the side tubes absorb the impact of the waves, providing firm navigation.
"Draft" is the depth reached by the submerged part of the boat. RIBs have a minimal draft, which means they can navigate in very shallow waters without the risk of the hull touching the bottom. This is perhaps their greatest competitive advantage: it allows you to bring the bow practically right up to the sand of the beach or venture into sea caves and narrow passages between rocks where a sailboat or yacht could never venture.
Our platform is designed to offer total flexibility, understanding that every sea outing has unique characteristics. Depending on the type of RIB and the owner, you will find various ways to embark:
This is the most common scenario when looking for this type of vessel. You rent the entire RIB to enjoy it in the strict privacy of your partner, family, or friends. A 5 or 6-meter zodiac is the ideal environment for a cohesive group looking to decide on the fly whether they prefer to spend the afternoon snorkeling on a reef or cruising at top speed along the cliffs.
Although small inflatable boats are usually booked whole, VivaBoat also features large-length rigid inflatable boats (the so-called Maxi-RIBs of 9, 10, or more meters). On these powerful boats, some owners offer the per-seat booking modality. It is an excellent opportunity to sign up individually or as a couple for an organized route, sharing expenses with other VivaBoaters and enjoying a day at sea at a very low cost.
If you feel like renting an agile and private zodiac but do not have enough companions to make the price per person worthwhile, our group function allows you to publish your plan or join other users'. It is a fantastic tool to meet other snorkeling, diving, or coastal exploration enthusiasts.
Steering an inflatable boat is very intuitive, but it is subject to strict Merchant Marine regulations. On our platform, you can filter your search according to your nautical credentials.
A very important part of zodiac rentals focuses on vessels exempt from licensing. In Spain, if the RIB has a maximum length of 5 meters and is equipped with an outboard engine not exceeding 15 HP (horsepower), anyone of legal age can rent and drive it without any prior license. These boats are perfect for beginners, offering calm navigation, limited to daylight hours and a maximum distance of 2 nautical miles from the port or shelter.
If you hold the former "Titulín" (current Navigation License), the widest range of our catalog opens up to you. You will be able to steer zodiacs up to 6 meters in length with no engine power limit, guaranteeing speed and pure adrenaline. For larger RIBs (7, 8, or more meters), you will need to present qualifications such as the PNB (Basic Navigation Skipper) or PER (Recreational Boat Skipper).
If you prefer to have no responsibilities, do not have a license, or simply do not know the area and its dangers (hidden reefs, currents), you can always opt to rent a zodiac with a captain. This local expert will take you to the best spots on the coast. Check the inflatable's listing carefully to see if the professional's cost is added to the total price or listed as an additional charge.
Rigid inflatable boats have a particular operation that differentiates them from large yachts or catamarans, especially regarding spaces and port-side management.
Zodiacs operate mostly with outboard engines powered by gasoline (unlike the inboard diesel engines of large boats). The management of this resource is key:
- On private outings: The standard is that the client assumes the cost of the gasoline consumed. The owner will give you the full tank, and at the end of the day, you must replenish what was spent at the port gas station or pay them the equivalent amount based on the liters consumed.
- On shared per-seat outings: The amount for the route's fuel is already passed on in the ticket price you buy through VivaBoat, forming a comprehensive experience with no extra out-of-pocket expenses for gas.
The security deposit is a very common requirement among owners of inflatable boats rented bareboat. This financial guarantee, which is not processed or retained by VivaBoat, seeks to protect sensitive elements of the boat: the engine propeller (very exposed to hitting rocks in shallow waters) and the pneumatic tubes (susceptible to punctures if sharp objects or hooks are used carelessly). This amount is paid directly to the owner before departure and will be refunded at the end of the day after a quick inspection that everything is in order.
The start of your day will be quick and dynamic. You will meet the owner at the pontoon. Being an open boat without large interiors, the briefing (instructions) will focus on teaching you how to start the engine, the use of the "Man Overboard" system (a vital safety cord that must be attached to the driver), anchor handling to anchor correctly without damaging posidonia, and the location of life jackets. After paying the deposit and any agreed extras, you will be ready to cast off.
The center console design of a RIB prioritizes mobility and sunbathing space (bow solarium) but usually lacks large storage lockers. Therefore, regarding food and drink, although bringing your own supplies is the most common, the exact rules are dictated by the owner. We highly recommend checking the boat's listing. As a general tip for these boats: avoid bringing giant rigid plastic coolers that block the passage; check if the boat already includes an ice cooler under the seat. It is vital to avoid any glass containers, as a breakage on the pneumatic tubes is extremely dangerous.
For your personal luggage, the golden rule on a zodiac is to use waterproof backpacks or dry bags. When navigating fast and close to the water, splashing drops (spray) are common. Bring the bare minimum: towel, sunscreen (no aerosols to avoid staining the PVC), sunglasses, water shoes or fins to jump directly into the water from the tube, and your phone in a waterproof case.
Renting a zodiac is synonymous with squeezing every second out of the day, feeling the speed, and connecting directly with nature. Explore our extensive fleet, use the filters to adjust lengths, powers, and license requirements, and get ready for an unforgettable day at sea with the VivaBoat community.
