The ultimate guide to boat rentals: Your perfect day at sea

Boat rentals have become the preferred option for those who want to escape crowded beaches and experience the sea from a unique and privileged perspective. You no longer need to own a yacht to feel the sea breeze, discover hidden coves, or anchor in crystal-clear waters. At VivaBoat, we have created the perfect ecosystem to connect boat owners with our passionate community of sailors: the VivaBoaters.

The sailing experience is usually fully enjoyed in a single day, which is why the star format on our platform is the 1-day rental (known in the industry as a day charter). Our goal is for you to find the ideal vessel quickly, safely, and transparently, ensuring that your only concern is enjoying the horizon. Below, we detail everything you need to know to organize your perfect voyage.

Rental modalities on VivaBoat: The sea tailored to you

We understand that every sailor and group is different. For this reason, VivaBoat offers different ways to enjoy a nautical experience, adapting to the type of vessel and the proposal of each owner. Currently, you can find three main modalities for your booking:

Private rental

This is the most traditional and in-demand option. You rent the entire boat exclusively for yourself and your group of family or friends. Depending on the boat's conditions and your qualifications, this private rental can be done with or without a skipper. It is the perfect alternative for those looking for privacy, maximum route customization, and enjoying a day at their own pace.

Per-seat rental (Shared boat)

If you are just one or two people, or simply want to experience sailing without assuming the cost of renting an entire boat, this is your option. You book one or more seats on a boat that you will share with other VivaBoaters. It is a fantastic modality to socialize, meet people with the same interests, and sail at a much more accessible price, usually in an "all-inclusive" format.

Group creation

An innovative feature designed to optimize resources and foster community. On VivaBoat, you can join an existing group that lacks crew members, or create a new one to fill the maximum capacity of the boat and thus share the costs of the experience. The availability of these modalities is always clearly indicated on the listing of each vessel before making the reservation.

Types of boats available for rent

Choosing the right type of boat is the first step to guaranteeing the success of your nautical day. On our portal, we carefully categorize the fleet so you can find the vessel that best suits your needs.

Motorboats: Agility and guaranteed fun

Motorboats (including rigid inflatable boats or RIBs) are the queens of the day charter. Their main advantage is speed, allowing you to explore large stretches of coastline, visit multiple coves, or hop from one island to another in a single day. Having a shallower draft (the part of the hull underwater), they allow you to get much closer to the shore. They are ideal for dynamic groups looking to make the most of the day.

Sailboats: The essence of classic sailing

Sailboat rentals are designed for those who enjoy the journey as much as, or more than, the destination. Sailing powered solely by the wind is an eco-friendly, silent, and deeply relaxing experience. Although their cruising speed is lower than that of a motorboat, they offer unmatched traditional charm and usually feature very livable interiors. It is the preferred option for those seeking total disconnection.

Catamarans: Comfort, stability, and spaciousness

If space and comfort are non-negotiable, the catamaran is your boat. Having two parallel hulls, they offer spectacular beam (width) and amazing stability, drastically reducing the chances of seasickness. They have large sunbathing areas, bow nets, and huge lounges. They are the perfect choice for large groups, celebrations, or families who want to spend most of the day comfortably anchored.

Yachts: Luxury, power, and exclusive service

Luxury yacht rentals elevate the experience to another level. They combine avant-garde design, high-power engines, and finishes worthy of a five-star hotel. Typically, these types of vessels require being rented with a professional crew (captain and, frequently, a deckhand or hostess) who will be in charge of providing impeccable service on board.

Sailing with or without a skipper? What you need to know

A frequent question when renting a boat is whether to take command or delegate it to a professional. Both options are available on VivaBoat, and the choice will depend on your experience and the type of plan you are looking for.

Skippered boat rentals

If you do not have a nautical license, or if you prefer to forget about maneuvers and responsibilities, renting with a skipper is your lifesaver.

  • Local expertise: A good captain knows the secret spots, the best restaurants with sea access, and the most wind-protected coves that day.
  • Total security: In case of any unforeseen event or weather change, you will have an expert in charge.
  • Availability: Keep in mind that, depending on the boat, the skipper may be included in the base price or offered as an additional extra. This is always detailed in the boat's listing.
Bareboat rentals and required licenses

For experienced sailors, being your own captain is the ultimate expression of freedom. If you choose this route, it is mandatory to present the corresponding valid nautical license. In Spain, the most common licenses are:

  • No License: Boats with a maximum of 5 meters in length and 15 HP of power. Perfect for beginners, with restricted navigation to daylight hours and close to the coast.
  • Navigation License (Titulín): Allows steering boats up to 6 meters without power limits, going a maximum of 2 miles from the coast.
  • PNB (Basic Navigation Skipper): Enables lengths up to 8 meters and a distance of 5 miles from a port or shelter.
  • PER (Recreational Boat Skipper): The star qualification. Allows steering boats up to 15 meters and sailing up to 12 miles from the coast, including night navigation.
Planning your day: The rental process step by step

For your experience as a VivaBoater to flow smoothly, it is essential to know how the day unfolds, especially the moments before casting off.

What happens on check-in day?

The start of your adventure begins at the base port. On check-in day, you will meet the owner or the assigned skipper at the previously agreed point and time. During this meeting:

  • A visual inspection and complete review of the vessel will be carried out before setting sail.
  • The operation of basic safety and navigation equipment will be explained.
  • If applicable and according to your booking conditions, agreed extras will be paid (such as the skipper's fee if it's an extra, water toys rental, or the deposit). This process is vital to ensure everything is transparent and clear, allowing you to begin your experience with absolute peace of mind.
Practical tips for your day on board

Storage space on a boat, regardless of its size, is always limited. To optimize your stay on board, we highly recommend carrying your luggage in soft bags or backpacks, always avoiding rigid suitcases or those with wheels, as they damage the deck.

Regarding sun protection, always opt for high-factor sunscreens that are respectful of the marine ecosystem (Reef Safe). Avoid aerosol or spray protectors at all costs; their particles stain the upholstery and make the deck a very slippery and dangerous surface. Finally, to move around the boat, do so barefoot or use nautical footwear with white soles so as not to leave marks on the gelcoat or wood.

Explore our catalog, use the filters to refine your search, and get ready to experience the sea like never before. At VivaBoat, your next great nautical adventure is just a few clicks away.
